Frequently Asked Questions

When do you meet?

BHSA meets weekly in the Fall and Spring semesters on Thursdays from 9:00am to 1:00pm. Families are expected to arrive by 8:45am in order to prepare for the 9:00am start time. After the three class rotations, we eat lunch together followed by open gym play. Families may stay later than 1:00pm to help with clean-up. Each semester runs about 14 weeks. Often during the semester and off-months, members will organize gatherings at which other co-op families (or just moms!) are included.

Where do you meet?

We meet at a host church in the Bellevue area of Nashville, TN.

What is your sick policy?

You can read our sick policy in full here. In general, if you are sick, stay home and rest so that we can see you again the next Thursday.

Who are the teachers?

A true cooperative, BHSA is led by the moms. Moms lead-teach and co-teach each of the classes. Moms also propose classes to be taught. If you have an idea for a topic you want your child to learn, or if you have a passion for a certain subject, you very well could have the opportunity to teach that class! For new members, there may be an opportunity for you to be a dedicated substitute or co-teach the first semester rather than lead teach from the outset.

How much does BHSA cost?

Registration fees (currently $120) are due at the start of each academic year. Additionally, individual classes require fees (averaging $5-$30) in order to provide materials for the students. Twice a year, BHSA collects donations for charitable causes. We strive to offer quality educational experiences and genuine community for the entire family while also remaining affordable.

What ages are accepted?

Families with any number of children, ranging in age from newborn through high school are welcome at our co-op. Note that nursery and preschool are open only to families with K-12 siblings enrolled at BHSA.

What classes are offered?

In the past, we have offered a variety of classes, including biology dissection for middle- and high school, world history, survival skills, textile arts, music, film and literature, electrical circuits, food art, apologetics, American geography, and Biztown, to name a few. Classes are decided based on student interest and teacher strengths. Check out our proposed classes for Fall 2023.

When does registration open?

Registration opens the last Thursday in March for current members. For new members, class registration opens the first Thursday in April. Registration closes on May 31, but member applications may still be submitted. Because member applications must be approved prior to registration, any applications submitted after May 31 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

What other responsibilities do moms have, in addition to teaching?

Each mom is expected to take on a role to better facilitate the co-op. Roles include event planning, cleaning, coordinating substitutes, monitoring recess, and coordinating courses, to name a few.

How many absences can my family have each semester?

BHSA relies on steady attendance of each of its moms and kiddos. If needed, you may have one planned absence a semester (alert the Subs Coordinator in advance). You may miss a meeting if you are sick or have a family emergency.

Can I drop my kids off for classes?

BHSA is a co-op, meaning the whole family participates in the child's education. Moms are the teachers and remain on-site, ready and willing to participate, for the entire morning. BHSA is *not* a drop-off tutorial!
